Hamburg Airport - the gateway to the world

Hamburg Airport is the largest international airport in northern Germany. With 13.6 million passengers in 2023, passenger numbers have risen again faster than expected after the pandemic. For comparison: in the pre-corona year 2019, over 17 million passengers were counted. An extensive route network is offered from Hamburg: Around 1,000 destinations worldwide can be reached with just one change. Around 15,000 employees work in almost 250 companies on the airport site (Hamburg Airport Group: around 1,800). The shareholders of the partially privatized airport are the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg with 51 percent and AviAlliance GmbH with 49 percent.

For three decades now, Hamburg Airport has been committed to reducing CO2 emissions. With success: the airport has been CO2-neutral since 2021. With its climate strategy "Net Zero 2035 - Now. For the future", Hamburg Airport aims to reduce the airport city's greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2035 and to forego offsetting - as the first major airport in Germany to do so. A key step in this direction is the construction of the airport's own wind farm, which will cover the energy requirements of ground operations and the more than 100 buildings on the airport site. The airport is also involved in both regional and international research projects to drive forward the energy transition in aviation. The focus here is primarily on hydrogen as a climate-neutral fuel, the use of which in civil aviation appears possible by the end of 2035.
